Annually at minimum. If your wood stove is a primary heat source running most of the winter, mid-season cleaning is also recommended. Connector pipes on wood stoves accumulate creosote faster than open fireplace flues.

A complete wood stove cleaning includes sweeping the flue connector pipe, cleaning the stove interior, removing ash and creosote from the firebox and baffle, inspecting the door gasket and glass, and checking the stovepipe connections for gaps or corrosion. DME Maintenance provides a written report after every visit.

The rope gasket around the stove door compresses over time and loses its seal. Test it by closing the door on a dollar bill — if the bill pulls out easily, the gasket is worn. A failed gasket allows excess air into the firebox, reducing efficiency and increasing creosote formation.

Stovepipe connector sections (the pipe between the stove and the wall thimble or ceiling support box) should be inspected annually and replaced when rust-through, perforation, or failed joints are found. Single-wall connector pipe typically lasts 5-10 years depending on use intensity.
