Nassau Wood Fireplace Chimney Cleaning — Creosote Removal

Creosote is a tar-like residue produced by incomplete wood combustion. It builds up inside chimney flues and is highly flammable. A thick layer can ignite into a chimney fire burning above 2,000°F — cracking flue liners and potentially igniting your home's structure.

DME Maintenance recommends inspection before first use each season. If the chimney was not cleaned last spring and has not been inspected, call for an inspection first. A blocked or creosote-laden chimney can cause CO to back up. Chimney cap condition should also be verified before lighting the first fire.

Burn seasoned hardwood — wood split and dried for at least one year, ideally two. Moisture content should be below 20%. Oak, hickory, ash, and maple are excellent choices for Long Island. Avoid softwoods like pine for primary heating use, green wood, and any treated or painted wood.
