A chimney crown (also called a crown wash) is the sloped masonry cap on top of a brick, block, stone, or stucco chimney. Its job is to shed water away from the flue and masonry. When crowns crack or are missing, water enters, bricks loosen, and freeze–thaw damage accelerates.
