Where Is Your Chimney Leak Coming From? Nassau County Diagnosis Guide

Most Nassau County chimney leaks are misdiagnosed. Water follows gravity and mortar cracks, so the stain you see inside rarely marks exactly where the water entered. DME Maintenance performs a systematic top-to-bottom diagnosis before quoting any repair.

How Chimney Flashing Repair Works

1

Identify the water entry point

Many chimney leaks are attributed to flashing when the actual source is the crown, cap, or mortar joints — and vice versa. We systematically inspect all potential entry points before recommending repairs.

2

Assess flashing condition

We inspect the step flashing, counter flashing, and the caulk seal between them. Separation of counter flashing from the masonry and failed caulk joints are the most common failure modes.

3

Re-seal or re-flash

Minor separation is re-caulked with roofing sealant. Severely deteriorated flashing sections are re-flashed with new aluminum or lead flashing material set into the masonry joints.

4

Verify repair

We document the repair with photos and provide a written description of what was done. If the leak persists after repair, we return to diagnose further — we don't charge for a failed repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is water getting into my chimney?

The five most common entry points: a missing cap, cracked crown, failed flashing, deteriorated mortar joints, or a cracked flue liner. Proper diagnosis requires checking all five.

There's water in my firebox after rain — what's the source?

Water inside the firebox after rain usually means a missing cap or cracked crown. Call 516-690-7471 for free on-site diagnosis.

I have ceiling stains near my chimney — is it roof or chimney?

If staining appears near the chimney after rain with intact shingles, the source is almost always flashing failure at the roof-chimney joint.

Should I waterproof my chimney after repair?

Yes — ChimSaver waterproofing applied after crown repair, pointing, or flashing work seals all repaired surfaces permanently.

My ceiling is stained near the chimney — is that a chimney leak?

Possibly, but not certainly. Ceiling stains near a chimney can come from flashing failure (most common), a cracked crown, a missing or damaged cap, failing mortar joints, or an unrelated roof leak. DME Maintenance systematically inspects all potential entry points before recommending repairs — we find the actual source rather than guessing.

Water is getting into my firebox — where is it coming from?

Water in the firebox almost always comes from a failed or missing chimney cap, a cracked crown, or severely deteriorated mortar joints at the top of the chimney. Less commonly it comes from flashing failure. Call DME Maintenance at 516-690-7471 for an on-site diagnosis.
